Om
Some shitty band
Earthless :Feb 23rd @ the Echo

It's a little weird when shows in L.A at small clubs start on time, it kinda fucks up the rest of us who take the time to prepare for a show of this nature. I mean c'mon, this is a OM...2/3rds of the all mighty SLEEP, a band that were the monastic goners who delivered an hour-long narrative song about caravans of marijuanauts and weedians crossing riff-filled desert lands on an epic drug run.
..... So how do you prepare for that, you pacl bowl after bowl at home, then you meet your friend in the parking lot, and smoke more good weed, then slowly make your way into the club, only to find that the show started on time, and everyone in attendance looks at you kinda weird, which makes you feel kinda paranoid, ahh, no worries, it's only a drug...and what's with Stoners being on time?
So my partners in crime tonight, Philco))) and his queen Vero made our way to bar for a few beers and a shot of Tequila, running into friends and accomplices along the way. We find out that we missed Earthless, and EVERONE said they were AMAZING... Oh well, the next time they come through town, I'll be sure to catch em.. I almost bought a cd from them but I have been low on cash lately, so I held back.,,and bought one of the cool silkscreened posters on heavy ass cardboard, NOT CARDSTOCK.
Some girl and some guy were preparing the stage for the next band, it turns out, THEY WERE THE NEXT BAND! A drum machine, a tabla, a harmonium, and possibly a sitar (I am not sure, I never got close enough, keep reading, you'll understand why) - they were sitting down, and sound checking, and it sounded like total shit. The mix was horrible, not to mention that it was vaguely reminiscent of being at some AA hippy party, it just sucked, it killed the vibe in the room, and was just loud enough to be a nuisance to all in attendance, who were busy talking to one another, it was like being tortured, similar to walking into Guitar Center, that dull cacaphoney of instrument play, and nothing ever seems to link up and guve you hope that this "music" is going somehere....YEA, RIGHT IN THE FUCKING TRASH NEXT TO THE SHITTY CRATE AMPS!
"Are you in Graves At Sea"?.. Some "Jimmy Bower" look alike asked me...it's funny, cuz I see this guy at shows all the time, and never once did he ask me that, and now he bust that question out.... Usually someone is asking me if I am in Phobia, or Static X, or Less Than Jake, or Himsa.... Listen up people, not all skinny white guys with dreads look the same, DAMN!
Finally that shitty "band" left the stage, we all applauded, just to be nice, but had this been at any other show, we would have dismembered them piece by piece.... They should have just spun that Ravi Shankar disc "Transmigration Macabre" - it's short, scary and way better than what we had to endure.
The back of the stage at the Echo was nothing short of amazing, and expensive. 2 huge Green bass cabs, and these seemed bigger than the typical 8x10 cab, plus 3 4x12 cabs, and 3 Green Heads, just fucking SICK!!!.
Al Cisneros drummer Chris Hakius came to the stage and started the show with "At Giza"...super mellow, super hypnotic, and 100% GODLY!... For the next hour or more, OM completely devastated the audience with their brand of psychedelic doom flavored chants, cuz in the end that's what it is, they keep a tone and rhythm going that slowly puts you in a trance, a kind of aural Yoga if you will, your legs are still shaking at the end of the session because of the power, you feel drained, but uplifted and light as smoke - haha.
It didn’t seem like Al abused the volume either, it just filled the room with bass, like you were being hugged by the High Priest of psyche-doom.
An amazing show that I hope to catch again and again.
