INDIAN and YAKUZA,
Empty Bottle, Chicago
12-23-5

I was lucky enough to be in Chicago when there was a fantastic performance by local amp worshiping sludge hogs, INDIAN. No surprise it was totally despondent, foulness from the mire. Literally alongside them was prog-death space ninjas YAKUZA who have been traversing a path of jazzy experimental metal through chicago for some years now. This was an entirely incestuous show as members of both bands performed simultaneously to achieve monumental levels of sound and doom. A feat so impressive, that I am convinced it is sinful. So much wattage goes against god... I think.

For starters, Indian employed the assistance of drummer JimmyStaffel, of Yakuza to pound the heads into oblivion. Jim is one of the hardest hitting, and most professional drummers, and hardest working that I have seen. You may have seen him tour with Buried at Sea, with a wide range of performance ability, Staffel rocked for two straight sets without any intermission as the Indian rockage bled over into the Yakuza set. Such a transition from the dilatory sludgyness and listless tempos of indian to the progressive and transient almost death metal styling's of Yakuza is a gamut most musicians should not endure, especially without rest. Jim pulled it off with majesty. Also, Jackson Grimm, bass player of Yakuza sat under a blanket with mysterious equipment creating a fog of ambient sound throughout the Indian set.

Then the ambience got really interesting as the Singer from Yakuza stepped up with his magic sax and ensued with his unearthly shakiness signal feeds. One by one the Members of Yakuza took the stage until all hell broke loose and it was just a full out onslaught of madness! It was hard to stay still. A fantastic and impressive unification's of power. Without any pause, Indian left the stage and it quickly turned into the Yakuza set, which was devastating. This band has come a long way. They have a new album coming out on prosthetic records, so keep an eye out if you like trippy heavy metal. I recommend it.

EXTRA MEDIA

Now you can watch a small bit of this performance for your self by seeing a clip online. I'm not sure why there are so many good bands from chicago...But check it out, the camera is a little shaky because it was hard not to get thrashed about during all the madness. This is Yakuza and Indian destroying everything together.
