Negative Reaction/Ramesses split lp
Ken E. Bones, Negative Reaction, New York...Thats right. One of the most under appreciated heavy dirge bands out there slam out two crushing anthems of Star wars induced sludge. Actually the Song "Prayer for Constance" is a tribute to a scotts man back in the old days, the whole story is part of a masonic ritual tale, as you see Ken E. Bones is a high ranking Mason, and proud. The true jem is "NOD" which is this groin grinding rock blur that some how goes from a biker bar, to the forests of endor, and back. Listen and believe. Ramesses is very metal, and reminds me of Cumdumpster, the production isn't great, but the riff will getcha in a 6feet under kinda way. A must have for your ultimate Sludge collection.
Quest onward.
Kylesa self titled lp
One of the most original bands from the dirty south, Kylesa doesn't play any type of music, they create new genres with every song. Its hard to pinpoint what they sound like since each song is distinctively different. Often called "Weird", kylesa hails from ex members of pioneers DAMAD, and there are allot of similarities. Female/Male screaming along with inventive guitar tones to angry tempos, strange noises, overall aggression. Imagine if Neurosis ate Sick Of it All, With a side of His Hero is Gone. With an awesome anthem "A100 heat index" there is also a bonus video track compiling a bunch of live/studio shots. Also, fabulous Pushead art, this albulm is a must have if you like genre bending. Rebreather/Starchild split lp
Another Ohio band, Rebreater who really rocks, but unfortunately quells their temper on this lp for what are catchy, but light around the edges type songs. They are great jams, but I've heard them do better. The real stars of this split are Starchild, who traveled through time from 1972 to record 3 fantastic songs. When I heard Starchild, I was instantly hooked, these guys do it right. Comming from the school of Sabbath with awesome solos, running bass and strange chorus and vocal parts. I get into it, especially "War of the Worlds" which is a gem of a song. They just played Chicago and I was surprised to see how young they were. Usually musicians of this caliber and sect are old timers reliving high school glory days. But Starchild rocks and they will be worth your time. Good for any psychedelic stoner searching for a good trip. Available trough twin earth
Fistula- "Idiopathic"
Fistula is an ugly whore, caked with smeared two day old makeup that does not quite cover the craked and crusted herpes blisters surrounding the mouth and knose. Something about the midwest, or maybee Ohio, that continues to produce this strange breed of new crusty sludge that oozes from the womb of Grief and and suckles at the teet of Buzzoven&Bongzilla. The dreadfull spawn of such bands is bound to be ugly, and rancid.Even the artwork reflects a drug induced hatefest, mirroring that of the aformentioned. There is a fantastic eric clapton cover of "cocaine" that really drives apon that one meldoic riff, made sludgy and heavy, with painful vocals. This is my favorite part, the best on the albulm. My small brain gets confused when there are two many notes that don't rhyme, I like it simple and crushing. Like, hey, your moms dead. Or hey, your indited. I like to wrap my head around one thing at a time. But for the most part, once you pick the scabs, Fistula gets nice and juicy, and I can get off to it.And they are amazing live.
If you are cool you will get it.
Crushers Killers Destroyers-Shifty Records comp. Once again, shifty records has scouped the scum from the pool filters, that whad a grey, black, slimy, hairy stuff that no one else wants to touch, and slapped it onto a cd. Some bad ass sludge, starting with some choice cuts by MUGWART, who truly rule, R.I.P. Goatsblood is very good, allot like Grief. MOLEHILL sounds almost Exactly like EYEHATEGOD, a great discovery indeed. Fistula puts on one of their best shows ever. Im not sure what exactly to make of Sloth...Japanesse, basement, reverb. Most absolutely for fans of Grief and Eyehategod. A rare item, a must for your sludge collection. If you are cool you will get it.
Y.O.B. -Catharsis This is one of the most important new doom albulms to come out. ESSENTIAL for any collection. It picks up right where the first album left off, panning over the misty mountain tops, then traveling deep, deep inside to the cold dark caves where we find YOB, alone, mystified by the precious. After a long while of dripping stalactites and dark whispers and deep echoes of the caverns, the creature YOB suddenly stands up and starts screaming and pounding the moistened walls. YOB runs and runs through out the twisting turning caves, the mind of YOB wonders through the cloudy mists of industrialized pollutants filling the sky, horrified at the destruction man has wrought on his only home planet, and begins to get very upset and angry. After a long spiritual journey, YOB comes to realize that there is just one life to live, and there are some things, few as they may be, that make getting up in the morning possible, and though you can't have everything, at least you have the precious, and that's the real driving force behind YOB.
Outlaw Order 00% Demo This is Brian Patton, Mike Williams, Joe Lacaze and the old bass player from EHG from "Take as Needed" and someone else from NOLA all jaming in a post EHG style. Its very raw, much like the lattest EHG/ SOILENTGREEN 7"split. You can tell there is no more Jimmy Bower, there is nothing really slow or Vitus about this at all. It is very obvious that Patton must be steering because it sounds allot like soilent green. A little faster and technical, but still really raw. The one thing that is certain, the old doom days of Eyehategod are dead, and Outlaw Order will probably progress on the toes of Soilent green, hopefully creating a new sound for us ..
